The Vegan Diet—and Hair Loss

The Vegan Diet—and Hair Loss

Becoming a vegan can be a positive and life-changing decision that brings many health and wellness benefits. For example, a study by the American Heart Association found that a vegan diet decreases heart disease by about 42 percent. A plant-based diet can also lower your risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, colon and breast cancers (Cleveland Clinic).

Did you know that veganism can also bring an unexpected and unwanted side effect—hair loss? Whether you’re already committed to a vegan diet or simply exploring the idea, it’s important to know that this type of hair loss is preventable. (Take a moment to breathe a sigh of relief!) To combat hair loss, you simply need to fuel your body—and your hair—with the essential vitamins and minerals needed to stay strong.

Let’s take a closer look at why vegans might experience hair loss … and simple steps that can be taken to help prevent it.

What Causes Vegan Hair Loss?

Nutritional Deficiency – Vegans eliminate all animal byproducts and meat from their diet. The result? A swift decline in one’s protein consumption. If your protein levels are too low or you’re not getting the necessary amount of nutrient-rich B vitamins or iron your body needs to absorb them properly, your body may react by halting hair growth. While this stoppage helps your body conserve energy for other vital functions, it brings unwanted hair loss/shedding.

Help Prevent Hair Loss:

1. Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods – Iron, vitamins B, C, D and E and zinc are all necessary for energy and hair growth. Green leafy vegetables, nuts and soy will help give your body the essential nutrients it needs.

2. Pack Some Protein – Energy-boosting chai seeds, beans, lentils and quinoa are all packed with protein and can help ensure you don’t feel sluggish or lose your precious locks.

3. Visit Your Doctor Regularly – Your physician can determine if you’re nutrient-deficient in any area and will be able to offer helpful recommendations (including healthful foods, vitamins, and/or supplements) based on your individual nutritional needs. If hair loss is indeed an issue, he or she can verify if it might be caused by another factor, too, such as: medication, heredity, an undiagnosed thyroid disorder or stress.

Whether you’re a vegan or not, be your own health and wellness advocate! Don’t be shy about speaking up and seeking help if you need it. After all, you know your body better than anyone.
