The Joy of Discovery

The Joy of Discovery

This little girl’s reaction to discovering her eyebrows is a lesson in confidence.

If you’re having a rough day, take thirty seconds and watch this video of a little girl seeing her eyebrows for the first time. It’s a simple, cute video – the kind you see on social media every day, have a smile, maybe share with a friend, then move on. But maybe there’s more to it than that.

Upon discovering the magnificence of her natural brows (and giving them an inaugural wiggle) she gives the camera a smolder that would make Derek Zoolander blush. Pure confidence. I challenge you to think about the last time you saw your face and were as genuinely happy as this little girl. When was the last time you caught your reflection passing a mirror, or accidentally opened your phone’s selfie camera with no makeup on and thought, “Hey. Not bad, baby!”

You see, we’re taught from a young age (especially girls, but boys too!) that we’re not perfect. We’re taught to poke, prod and pluck… to exercise, jazzercise and starve ourselves until we fit an ideal of beauty that even our most striking celebrities need Photoshop to obtain. It’s no secret that there’s a crisis of confidence among America’s women. Last year, a survey by Dove showed that 96% of women questioned would not describe themselves as beautiful. You can start changing that number today.

Next time you catch a glimpse of yourself, think of the confident little girl seeing her eyebrows for the first time. Believe that you’re good enough the way you are, and you might just find a change of perspective.
